My Thoughts: This collection of short stories by Mike Russell really surprised me. It’s not something that I would normally gravitate to on my own, but thanks to StrangeBooks, I found something new and different that I actually really enjoyed. Outside of school, I had never really read any short fiction. The idea of it always perplexed me a bit. I love getting deep into stories and characters, and I didn’t think that I could have that full experience with short stories. This book proved me wrong. The eight stories in Strange Medicine were immersive and I felt more for the characters than I thought possible in such a short amount of time. The stories are weird, funny, sad, thought provoking, and beautiful. My favorite was 72 Bricks, a story about a man trying desperately to stay connected to his late wife. It really struck a chord with me, and I thought it was extremely sad, and so relatable. The imagery that Russell used was genius, and I find myself thinking about this story often. There are many little gems throughout this collection, and I think that everyone will find something they can connect to while reading it. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a quick and enjoyable read that is different from anything you may have read before. I am so grateful to StrangeBooks for introducing me to this book and to the works of Mike Russell, who I will definitely be following from now on!
